The Founder and Gemologist Behind Nicole Mera

Where did you grow up, and what do you love about living in San Antonio today?

I was born and raised in San Antonio, and it will always feel like home. It’s where my family is, where lifelong friendships began, and where Nicole Mera was born. I love how the city blends culture, creativity, and community, especially when it comes to supporting small businesses and the arts.

Where did your passion for jewelry come from, and what inspired you to study gemology?

I come from a family of creatives: My grandfather made stained glass and my mom handmade everything, including my Halloween costumes. I always loved jewelry, but didn’t realize fine jewelry could be a career until a friend told me about GIA. Once I started learning about gemstones, I knew I had found a meaningful, lasting way to express my creativity.

What inspires your designs and creative process?

My clients and their stories are always my starting point. I draw inspiration from architecture, gemstones, fashion, and personal experiences to design jewelry that’s both expressive and timeless. Each piece is about more than beauty; It’s about connection.

What’s one of your favorite jewelry creations to date?

I’m proud of my award-winning pieces, but the most meaningful designs are those rooted in personal stories. One favorite is a custom ring made from a client’s heirloom jewelry to honor her late mother. It blended memory and craftsmanship into something brand new and deeply personal.

What jewelry are you wearing right now?

I love mixing metals and layering styles—it feels modern and effortless. Right now, I’m wearing stacked diamond bands, my Bulgari Serpenti watch, a few meaningful necklaces, and my grandmother’s gold locket updated with a paperclip chain. It’s a mix of sentimental pieces and polished sparkle that fits any day.

Tell us about one of your most memorable trips.

Travel inspires so much of my design work and personal growth. One unforgettable trip was to the Potentate Sapphire Mine in Montana with my partners at Parlé Gems. I left with greater insight and appreciation for these incredible gemstones.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone investing in fine jewelry for the first time?

Choose something that truly resonates with you—it should feel meaningful, not just trendy. Celebrate the moments that matter, big or small, and let jewelry reflect your story. Learning about gemstones and craftsmanship helps you buy with confidence and intention.
