The Enchanting June Birthstones: Pearl, Moonstone, and Alexandrite

The month of June is truly special, as it is associated with three stunning birthstones: pearl, moonstone, and alexandrite. Each of these gemstones possesses a unique allure and has been utilized in exquisite jewelry designs by various renowned jewelry designers. In this blog post, we will explore the significance and beauty of these June birthstones, as well as delve into how I incorporate them into my Nicole Mera creations.

The Timeless Elegance of Pearls:

Pearls are one of the most classic and revered gemstones in the world, Symbolizing purity and wisdom, and are the only gemstones formed within living creatures. Perhaps the best-loved gems of all time, pearls—natural and cultured—occur in a wide variety of colors. The most familiar are white and cream, but the palette of colors extends to every hue. Natural pearls form around a microscopic irritant in the bodies of certain mollusks. Cultured pearls are the result of the deliberate insertion of a bead or piece of tissue that the mollusk coats with nacre (GIA.edu).

I choose to embrace the vibrant luster and elegance of pearls in my designs, combining them with something a bit more contrasting such as step-cut gemstones and diamonds to create a harmonious blend of textures and colors. By infusing pearls into modern and playful designs, I want to breathe new life into these classic gemstones, making them youthful, fresh, and captivating.

The Mystical Aura of Moonstones:

Moonstones, known for their enchanting play of light and iridescent glow, have long been associated with lunar energy and mystical qualities. According to the Gemological Institute of America, ancient Romans believed that moonstones were formed from solidified moonlight. But what we know now is that during formation, layers begin to separate within the gemstone. When light falls between these thin layers it is scattered producing the phenomenon called adularescence. Adularescence is the light that appears to billow across a gem.

I seek out colorless, transparent moonstones with a blue sheen or rainbow sheen to create fascinating jewelry pieces. I try to avoid anything too traditional and play with the unexpected while infusing the designs with a sense of enchantment.  From intricately designed rings to captivating pendants, moonstones take center stage, usually surrounded, or paired with brilliant diamonds, capturing the mesmerizing interplay of light and color within these extraordinary gems.

The Captivating Charm of Alexandrite:

Alexandrite, a rare and remarkable gemstone, captivates with its color-changing phenomenon. Its hues shift from green in daylight to a vibrant red under incandescent light, making it a true marvel of nature. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s (named after young Alexander II – It caught the country’s attention because its red and green colors mirrored the national military colors of imperial Russia.) It is now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil, but fine material is exceptionally rare and valuable. Most cut gems weigh less than one carat. Larger, higher-quality gems rise in price dramatically.

Although rare, I had the opportunity to design a custom ring for a client and friend who possessed a precious Alexandrite gemstone.  Purchased on a trip to Dubai many years ago, she held onto it for a while, knowing she wanted a custom Nicole Mera jewel. Over many months we worked remotely by texting, sending DM’s and emailing over various designs and ideas so that when the timing was right, we would be able to create the perfect jewel, and this is the final product (see below). A double reverse halo of Diamonds and Alexandrites set in 18K Rose Gold. We also had to add several claw prongs to the center for added security, but it really acts as the perfect edgy contrast to the feminine style of the ring. Black rhodium details to make the Alexandrites just pop! There is a color change of purple-red to her ring so this really is a spectacular “phenomenal” ring. This extraordinary piece exemplifies the rarity and beauty of Alexandrite while incorporating Nicole Mera’s signature style.
